Un po' di storia
Construction of the Millennium Monument started in 1896 to mark the thousand-year anniversary of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin and the founding of the Hungarian state in 896. The square was named in 1900, and the monument was largely completed by 1906. Originally, statues of Habsburg rulers occupied five spaces on the left colonnade, but these were replaced after World War II damage. On 16 June 1989, a crowd of 250,000 gathered here for the reburial of executed leader Imre Nagy.
