The Zócalo, officially Plaza de la Constitución, is the main plaza of Mexico City and one of the largest public squares globally, measuring about 240 meters per side. This vast open space has been a gathering place since Aztec times, when it was the ceremonial center of Tenochtitlan. Today, it's flanked by the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, and other historic buildings. The plaza hosts everything from massive concerts and political rallies to cultural festivals and an ice rink in winter. Visitors can walk across the giant Mexican flag at the center and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
