Hakata Gion Yamakasa

Hakata Gion Yamakasa is one of Fukuoka's most spectacular annual events, held every July in the Hakata district. The festival centers around the 'Oiyama' race, where teams of men in traditional loincloths carry massive, elaborately decorated floats (kazariyama) through the streets at breakneck speed. The floats, some weighing over a ton, are adorned with intricate dolls depicting historical and mythical figures. The atmosphere is electric, with crowds cheering, drums pounding, and participants shouting encouragement. The festival spans two weeks, culminating in the early morning race on July 15th. Visitors can also see the floats on display at various locations throughout the city. This UNESCO-recognized tradition dates back over 700 years and is a vibrant expression of local culture and community spirit. Even if you miss the race, the decorative floats are a sight to behold.

Een stukje geschiedenis

Hakata Gion Yamakasa began in 1241 when a Buddhist priest, Shōichi Kokushi, had the floats paraded to pray for deliverance from a plague. The tradition has continued annually, evolving into the high-energy race seen today.
