Goryo Shrine
Goryo Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in the Awajicho district of central Osaka, surrounded by modern office buildings. Founded in the 5th century, it is one of the oldest shrines in the city and is dedicated to the spirit of Emperor Nintoku. The shrine is particularly famous for its annual 'Goryo-e' fire festival held in July, where large torches are lit to purify the area and ward off evil. The main hall, built in a traditional style, features a distinctive curved roof and intricate woodwork. The grounds include a small garden with a pond, stone lanterns, and a sacred tree. Despite its urban setting, the shrine exudes a calm, spiritual atmosphere. Visitors often come to pray for protection from fire and disaster, as well as for business prosperity. The shrine is also known for its connection to the local community, hosting various events throughout the year.
