Ajyad Fortress was a historic Ottoman fortress built in the 18th century on a hill overlooking the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. It served as a military garrison and later as a prison. In 2002, it was controversially demolished to clear land for the Abraj Al Bait complex, a modern hotel and shopping development. Today, no physical remains are accessible to visitors; the site is occupied by the clock tower and commercial buildings. The fortress is remembered as a symbol of lost Ottoman heritage and a subject of debate over preservation versus development.
