Saint Michael's Castle, also known as the Mikhailovsky Castle, was constructed between 1797 and 1801 as a secure residence for Emperor Paul I, who feared assassination. Its design combines medieval fortress elements with neoclassical details, featuring a moat, drawbridges, and a striking pink facade with white columns. The castle's interior includes the opulent Throne Room, the Gothic Dining Room, and the emperor's private apartments. Today, it houses a branch of the Russian Museum, displaying portraits and historical artifacts. The castle's tragic history, Paul was murdered here just 40 days after moving in, adds a somber layer to the visit.
