Barranco is Lima's bohemian heart, a small, walkable seaside district of colourful colonial mansions, street art, galleries, cafés, and some of the city's best bars and nightlife. Once the summer retreat of Lima's elite, it retains a faded-elegant charm, with its leafy main square, the Biblioteca, and the romantic Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs), where legend says first-time crossers who hold their breath get a wish.
By day it's for wandering the murals and browsing artisan shops and contemporary art spaces like the MATE museum (Mario Testino's gallery); by night it's Lima's liveliest scene of bars and live music. The clifftop walkways give sunset views over the Pacific. It's the most charismatic neighbourhood in the city and an easy add-on to neighbouring Miraflores.
