The National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka is the official home of bunraku, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage art form that combines puppetry, chanting, and shamisen music. The theater presents full-length performances in its main hall, where three puppeteers manipulate each intricately crafted puppet, while a tayu (chanted narrator) voices all characters. Visitors can witness the emotional depth and technical precision of this centuries-old tradition. The building also houses a museum with exhibits on puppet history and construction, and English earphone guides are available to help international audiences follow the plots.
Da non perdere
- Watch a full bunraku performance to see master puppeteers bring characters to life with subtle movements.
- Visit the small museum on-site to see antique puppets and learn about the craft of puppet-making.
- Use the English audio guide to understand the story and cultural context during the show.
