Un po' di storia

The square was named after the Leal Senado, a meeting place for Chinese and Portuguese from the 16th to 18th centuries. In 1940, a small garden with a bronze statue of Vicente Nicolau de Mesquita was built at the center, but the statue was removed after the 12-3 incident due to his role in the deaths of Qing soldiers. A fountain now stands in its place. The square was a traffic zone with parking until the early 1990s, when it was covered with Portuguese pavement and made pedestrian-only.
