Surabaya Zoo

Surabaya Zoo is a 15-hectare zoo in Surabaya, East Java. It houses thousands of animals, including a large collection of Komodo dragons. The zoo has faced serious criticism for animal treatment, with activist groups and media calling attention to animal deaths and neglect.

Know before you go

• Animal welfare concerns have been reported; some animals have died from ingesting plastic thrown by visitors.
• The zoo has a large Komodo dragon population, with plans for a dedicated dragon park in the Kenjeran coastal area.

A bit of history

The zoo was established by decree of the Governor General of the Netherlands East Indies on 31 August 1916. It moved locations several times, settling in the Darmo area by 1920. The zoo expanded to its current 15-hectare size by 1939. In the late 1980s, it renovated its breeding facility and ran a successful Bali starling breeding program, releasing 40 birds into the wild in 2011.
