Heroes Monument

The Heroes Monument is a 41.15-metre pillar-shaped monument in downtown Surabaya, dedicated to those who died in the Battle of Surabaya on 10 November 1945. It is the main symbol of the city. The 10 November Museum is located underneath the monument, with exhibitions including documentary photographs, dioramas of eight key events from the battle, and a collection of World War II-era weapons.

A bit of history

The monument was built to honour the youth of Surabaya and other Indonesian fighters who fell during the Battle of Surabaya on 10 November 1945, the largest single battle of the Indonesian National Revolution. The site itself is historically significant: it was formerly occupied by the Raad van Justitie building and later used by the Japanese Kempeitai during World War II. President Sukarno laid the foundation stone on 10 November 1951 and officially opened the monument one year later on 10 November 1952.
