Guo Zi Jian, also known as the Imperial College, served as the highest educational institution in China for over 700 years, from the Yuan dynasty (13th century) through the Qing dynasty. Located on Guozijian Street in Beijing's Dongcheng District, it's a serene complex of traditional Chinese buildings with yellow-glazed tile roofs and intricate wooden carvings. The centerpiece is the Pi Yong Hall, a square pavilion surrounded by a circular moat, symbolizing the harmony of heaven and earth. Visitors can explore the Hall of Great Achievement, where emperors once lectured, and see stone tablets inscribed with Confucian classics. The site is less crowded than the nearby Confucius Temple, offering a peaceful glimpse into China's scholarly past. Exhibits include ancient textbooks, examination papers, and artifacts from the imperial examination system.
