Parthenon

The Parthenon is a former temple on the Athenian Acropolis, built between 447 and 432 BCE under the leadership of Pericles. Designed by architects Ictinus and Callicrates with sculptural decoration by Phidias, it is the most important surviving building of classical Greece. The temple originally housed a massive gold-and-ivory statue of Athena Parthenos. Despite centuries of damage from war, explosions, and looting, the Parthenon remains an enduring symbol of ancient Greek civilization. Visitors can walk around the entire structure, observing the subtle curvature of the columns and the remnants of the metopes and friezes that once told mythological stories.

• Examine the Doric columns, which have a slight inward tilt and swelling (entasis) to create an optical illusion of perfection.
• Look for the remaining metopes depicting the battle between the Lapiths and Centaurs.
• View the Parthenon from the east side to appreciate the original location of the main entrance and the statue of Athena.
