The Basílica del Voto Nacional is a Roman Catholic church in Quito’s historic center. It is said to be the largest Neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas, reaching up to 83 meters in height. Visitors can climb the bell towers and explore the roofs for spectacular views of the city.

A bit of history
The idea for the basilica came from Father Julio Matovelle in 1883 as a monument to Ecuador’s consecration to the Sacred Heart. Construction began in 1892, designed by architect Emilio Tarlier, who was inspired by Bourges Cathedral. The basilica was blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1985 and consecrated in 1988. It remains technically unfinished; local legend says the end of the world will come when it is completed.
