La Carolina Park

La Carolina Park is a 165.5-acre park in the centre of the Quito central business district. It is bordered by the avenues Río Amazonas, de los Shyris, Naciones Unidas, Eloy Alfaro, and de la República. Quiteños gather here mostly on weekends to play soccer, basketball, and ecua-volley, an Ecuadorian variation of volleyball. The southern part has a small pond with paddle boats and a skatepark. Artists perform on weekends.

Know before you go
- Iñaquito metro station is in the northern part of the park; La Carolina metro station is in the southern part.
- Weekends are busy with soccer, basketball, ecua-volley, aerobics, kite flying, and running.
A bit of history
The park started from the expropriation of the farm La Carolina in 1939. Pope John Paul II headed a great Catholic mass here during his visit to Ecuador in 1985, and a giant Christian cross has been built in this place.
