The USS Becuna is a Balao-class submarine that served in the Pacific during World War II and later in the Cold War. Now a museum ship moored at Penn's Landing along the Delaware River in Philadelphia, visitors can climb through the narrow passageways, peer into the cramped sleeping quarters, and see the torpedo room. The self-guided audio tour provides insights into the daily life of the 80-man crew. The submarine is part of the Independence Seaport Museum complex, so you can also explore the museum's exhibits on maritime history. The experience is immersive: you'll smell the diesel and oil, and feel the tight spaces that made service on a submarine both challenging and intimate.
