Mahatma Phule Mandai

Mahatma Phule Mandai, formerly Reay Market, is Pune's largest retail vegetable market. It operates from a British colonial-era Gothic building in the Shukrawar Peth neighborhood. You'll see hundreds of fruit and vegetable stalls under an 80-foot octagonal tower and arched wings.

Ein Stück Geschichte

The market began as an open-air vegetable market outside Shaniwar Wada. In 1882, construction of the Gothic-style building started, designed by Walter Ducat and Vasudeo Kanitkar with engineer Narso Ramchandra Godbole. It opened as Reay Market, serving retail, wholesale, and municipal functions. In 1938, Acharya Atre renamed it Mahatma Phule Mandai to honor social reformer Jyotirao Phule. Wholesale operations moved to Gultekdi in the late 1970s, and municipal offices relocated to Shivajinagar decades ago.
