Common questions

What is the legend behind the Zhuhai Fisher Girl?

She fell in love with a fisherman named Haipeng, and after a series of trials, she became mortal and they married. She later found a large pearl and gave it to an elder in gratitude.

Why was the statue controversial when it was built?

Opponents argued that depicting a fisherwoman was immoral and that the cost of 200,000 yuan was too high for a city lacking adequate housing. Supporters said the statue was needed for Zhuhai to establish its own cultural identity.

Is there a companion piece to the Zhuhai Fisher Girl?

Yes, sculptor Pan He completed a companion piece called 'Mother River' in 2015 with his son. It depicts the fisherwoman as a mother teaching her child to swim, located along the Huangyuang River in Zhuhai's Doumen District.
