Bac Ha town, the capital of Bac Ha district, is a quiet highland settlement that becomes a hub of activity on Sundays when the famous market draws crowds. The rest of the week, it offers a tranquil base for exploring the surrounding countryside, rolling hills terraced with rice paddies, pine forests, and villages of the Flower Hmong, Tay, and Nung peoples. Visitors can trek to remote hamlets, visit local homes to see traditional weaving, or simply enjoy the cool mountain air. The town itself has a modest main street with guesthouses, restaurants, and shops selling local handicrafts. Its elevation (about 1,000 meters) provides a pleasant climate year-round.
