Bac Ha Market is the largest and most famous Sunday market in Vietnam's northern highlands, drawing Flower Hmong, Tay, and Dao people from remote villages. Visitors wander among stalls piled with colorful indigo-dyed fabrics, hand-embroidered clothing, silver jewelry, and local produce. The livestock section buzzes with the bartering of buffalo, pigs, and chickens. Beyond shopping, it's a living museum of hill tribe culture, where you can sample thang co (a hearty horse meat stew) and corn wine while observing traditional dress and customs. The market peaks in the morning, so arrive early for the full experience.

Don't miss

  • Watch Flower Hmong women in elaborate embroidered skirts and headscarves selling textiles and silverware.
  • Taste thang co, a local stew made from horse meat, organs, and herbs, simmered in large cauldrons.
  • Browse the livestock section where buffalo, pigs, and chickens are traded with animated bargaining.
