The food & service was top tier. It's pricey but definitely worth it. The decor is neutral and the music that played wasn't too loud so you don't have to yell to speak to the other folks at your table. Our waiter answered all of questions and was very courteous and friendly. I HIGHLY recommend getting the grilled octopus appetizer and pork chop main.
Looking for a Culinary Masterpiece? Look no further! Balos is more than just a restaurant; it's an unforgettable experience. From the moment I stepped through the door, I was captivated by the curated atmosphere. The ambiance was both inviting and sophisticated, setting the perfect stage for the culinary delights to come. The food was nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish was a masterpiece, showcasing the chef Alex's talent and passion for fresh, flavorful ingredients. The presentation was impeccable, and the flavors were a symphony of taste sensations. From the delicate appetizers to the decadent entrees, every bite was a memorable experience. Dessert is not to be missed as well! The service was impeccable. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and made us feel like VIPs. Our server, Shannon, and chef Alex guided us through the menu, offering expert recommendations and ensuring that our dining experience was flawless. In short, Balos is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates exceptional food, impeccable service, and a truly unforgettable dining experience. I can't wait to return and savor the culinary magic once again.
This spot was amazing. Our server was equally amazing. I had no expectation when my date stated we were doing brunch. I wanted a small element of surprise, so I didn't study the menu in advance. When we arrived the front desk greeter (African American with braided hair) took our coats from us for coat check and was just super pleasant. She read the room as we were dressed for brunch in formal clothes warranting a seat in the dining room. I think she gave us one of the best seats in the house. Restaurant wasn't super busy but we had such early reservations (11:30) that we understood. The menu items were explained and we asked about a few of the dishes as we ended up doing the pre-fixe menu. Pros and pros (no cons): The portion sizes are quit amazing! We ate from the spanakopita w/egg dish for three meals. The french toast was amazing, bacon cooked to perfection and the octopus was spectacular and plentiful. I would get the Octo with less sauce the next time but it was great and heated well for two additional servings. I also enjoyed the tableside espresso martini's and that presentation by the bartender. It was so fitting that I was introduced to my best EM in Mykonos and came running back to the US trying to get a bartender to duplicate; but I digress! The cart and display of spirits was spectacular. I had the smore's martini and my date had the cinnamon orange espresso martini (think an old fashioned glass with a bunch of yumminess and superior notes). Not sure if that is the original glass but I think with service to a male they give that glass vs. a martini glass. The service was awesome with multiple server assists to keep our water supply filled and all. So much so that babes left the server assist his own personal tip. I could go on and on, but we will be back! Decorations were nice as well. It was a bit chilly in the dining room but warmed up fairly well. $$ - $$$ but the quality of the leftovers made up for it.
My friends and I, visiting from Dubai, were excited to experience this establishment. Unfortunately, our visit was overshadowed by an unacceptable experience at the door. When we arrived, we were denied entry by the doorman without any reasonable explanation. After a few moments, he stated that if we wanted to enter, we’d need to Zelle $30 each to his personal account. Shockingly, while we were deciding what to do, two guests approached, shook his hand, and were let in immediately without any payment or reservation. This unprofessional behavior felt like an attempt to take advantage of us as out-of-town visitors. After speaking with others, it seems this is not an isolated incident—guests without reservations are frequently asked for cash or personal payments, which is both unethical and damaging to the establishment’s reputation. We’ve had far more positive experiences at other Greek restaurants like OPA, where hospitality and professionalism come first. I've also learned that the owner runs Five Cafe in the DMV area, and I urge them to hold their staff accountable to preserve their reputation. Without serious changes, this approach will only harm their business in the long run, which would be a shame.
