Black Bear Road is a legendary, unpaved 4x4 route that descends from the summit of Red Mountain Pass into Telluride. The narrow, rocky track features tight switchbacks and dramatic drop-offs, offering unparalleled views of the San Juan Mountains and the 365-foot Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado's tallest free-falling waterfall. Drivers must navigate exposed ledges and loose terrain, making it suitable only for experienced off-roaders with high-clearance vehicles. The route is typically open from late spring to early fall, weather permitting.
Don't miss
- Navigate the infamous 'Step' section, a steep rock ledge requiring careful tire placement.
- Photograph Bridal Veil Falls from above, with the valley stretching below.
- Spot remnants of historic mining operations along the route.
