The John O'Connell Bridge is a distinctive steel arch bridge that spans the Sitka Channel, linking downtown Sitka to Japonski Island. Completed in 1971, it replaced a ferry service and is named after a local politician. The bridge's graceful arch rises 65 feet above the water, providing drivers and pedestrians with sweeping views of the channel, boat traffic, and the snow-capped peaks of Baranof Island. Walking across the bridge is a popular activity, especially at sunset, when the light paints the water and mountains in golden hues. It's also a prime spot for watching eagles and sea otters.
Don't miss
- Walk the pedestrian lane for unobstructed views of the channel and marine wildlife.
- Photograph the bridge's arch against the backdrop of Mount Edgecumbe.
- Watch for sea otters and harbor seals playing in the waters below.
