Castle Hill, a grassy knoll overlooking Sitka, is one of Alaska's most significant historic sites. It was here in 1867 that the formal transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States took place, marked by the lowering of the Russian flag and raising of the American flag. Visitors can walk the short trail to the summit, where interpretive panels recount the event and the hill's earlier use as a Tlingit fortification and Russian military post. The site offers sweeping views of Sitka Sound, the surrounding mountains, and the city below.
