Lanyon Quoit is a striking Neolithic burial chamber, or dolmen, consisting of three upright stones supporting a huge, flat capstone. It stands in an open field near Penzance, offering a glimpse into prehistoric Cornwall. Originally taller, the capstone collapsed in the 19th century and was re-erected at a lower height. Visitors can walk right up to the structure, marvel at its size (the capstone weighs about 12 tons), and imagine the rituals that took place here over 4,000 years ago.
Don't miss
- The enormous capstone, measuring about 5.5 meters long and weighing 12 tons
- The dramatic setting on a windswept hill with views of Mount's Bay
- The opportunity to walk around and under the dolmen, a rare hands-on experience
