The Circus is a remarkable circular residential square designed by John Wood the Elder, completed in 1768. It consists of three curved segments of townhouses forming a perfect circle, with three evenly spaced entrances. The design is a prime example of Palladian architecture, with each facade featuring a different classical order (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian) stacked vertically. In the center stands a ring of ancient plane trees, creating a serene green oasis. The Circus is part of Bath's UNESCO World Heritage designation and is often compared to the Royal Crescent for its architectural ambition.

Don't miss

  • Walk around the entire circle to see the three classical orders decorating the facades.
  • Sit on the central green to admire the symmetry and the mature plane trees.
  • Look for the acorn finials on the railings, a nod to the nearby Bladud legend.
