The Herschel Museum of Astronomy occupies the Georgian townhouse where William Herschel lived with his sister and assistant Caroline. It was here, in the garden, that Herschel discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. The museum preserves the period rooms and displays replicas of his telescopes, including the 7-foot reflector used for the discovery. Interactive exhibits explain his music career and Caroline's contributions. A small garden has been recreated to show where the historic telescope once stood.
