The Main Avenue Historic District is the cultural and commercial heart of Durango, featuring a remarkably intact collection of late-19th-century architecture. Strolling along the wide, tree-lined avenue, visitors encounter brick and stone facades with ornate cornices and cast-iron storefronts, many dating from the 1880s to 1910s. The district is home to independent boutiques, art galleries, bookstores, and eateries, as well as historic landmarks like the Strater Hotel. The area buzzes with activity, especially during summer evenings when street musicians perform and outdoor patios fill with diners.
