The Animas-La Plata Water Project is a major water infrastructure initiative that resulted in the creation of Lake Nighthorse, a 1,500-acre reservoir. The lake and surrounding lands provide recreational opportunities including boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking on trails that wind through piñon-juniper woodlands. Visitors can enjoy the contrast of blue water against red rock mesas, with views of the La Plata Mountains. The project also supports local water rights and wildlife habitat.
Don't miss
- Kayak or paddleboard on the calm waters of Lake Nighthorse
- Hike the Ridgeline Trail for panoramic views of the reservoir and mountains
- Fish for trout, bass, and catfish from the shore or a boat
