York's city walls are the longest and best-preserved medieval town walls in England, offering a unique walking route that encircles the historic core. Visitors can climb onto the walls at multiple points and follow a 2.8-mile circuit, passing through four fortified gatehouses known as bars. The walk provides elevated views of the city's landmarks, including the Minster, and offers a tangible sense of York's medieval defenses. Along the way, you'll see remnants of Roman and Viking history embedded in the structure.

Don't miss

  • Walk the complete circuit from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar for varied views.
  • Climb the stairs at Micklegate Bar for a panoramic vista of the Minster.
  • Look for the Roman multangular tower embedded in the walls near the Museum Gardens.
