Westgate is a well-preserved medieval gatehouse that once controlled the western entrance to Winchester. Today, visitors can climb the stone stairs to enjoy sweeping views over the city and surrounding countryside. Inside, a small museum displays historic weights and measures, a gibbet cage, and graffiti left by prisoners held in the gate's cells. The structure itself, with its portcullis grooves and original timber doors, offers a tangible link to Winchester's medieval defenses. It's a quick, rewarding stop for history buffs and photographers.

Don't miss

  • Panoramic views of Winchester Cathedral and the South Downs from the roof
  • See the original 18th-century gibbet cage used to display executed criminals
  • Examine the prisoner graffiti carved into the cell walls
