The Old Customs House (Bangkok Custom House) stands as a stately reminder of Thailand's maritime trade history. Located on Soi Charoen Krung 36, this neoclassical building with its distinctive portico and columns was once the hub for inspecting goods arriving by ship. Today, it is a heritage site, though not always open to the public. Visitors can admire its architecture from the outside, imagining the bustling activity of the past. The surrounding Riverside area is lively, with riverside restaurants, the Asiatique night market, and the Chao Phraya River ferry piers nearby. The building's weathered facade and ornate details make it a favorite for photographers.

  • Learn about Bangkok's trade history from interpretive signs (if available)
  • Combine with a walk along Charoen Krung Road, Bangkok's oldest paved road
  • Visit nearby Wat Yannawa, a temple with a Chinese junk-shaped structure

  • Bring an umbrella during rainy season (May–October) as there is little shelter.

A bit of history

Built in the late 19th century during King Rama V's reign, the Old Customs House served as the main customs office for Bangkok's port. It was designed by Italian architect Joachim Grassi, blending European and Thai elements. It ceased operations in the mid-20th century.
