The Old Fort of Zanzibar, also known as the Arab Fort, is a massive stone structure built by Omani Arabs around 1700 to defend the island. Its thick walls enclose a courtyard that now buzzes with activity: a cultural center, artisan workshops, souvenir stalls, and a café. The fort also houses an open-air amphitheater that hosts live music and dance performances, especially during festivals. Visitors can climb the ramparts for views over Forodhani Gardens and the harbor. The fort's blend of history and contemporary culture makes it a vibrant stop in Stone Town.
Don't miss
- Explore the courtyard's artisan shops and watch local craftspeople at work.
- Climb the ramparts for views of the harbor and Forodhani Gardens.
- Check the schedule for evening performances at the amphitheater, featuring taarab music or dance.
