Changuu, commonly called Prison Island, is a small island off Zanzibar known for its giant tortoises and historical prison. Originally intended as a prison for rebellious slaves, the building was never used for that purpose. Today, visitors interact with dozens of Aldabra tortoises, some over 100 years old, in a sanctuary. The island also features the old prison ruins and beautiful sandy beaches. A short ferry ride from Stone Town makes it a popular half-day excursion combining history and nature.
Don't miss
- Feed and photograph the giant Aldabra tortoises, some weighing over 200 kilograms.
- Tour the abandoned prison building and learn about its intended purpose and later use as a quarantine station.
- Swim and sunbathe on the island's pristine eastern beach, with calm turquoise waters.
