The Old Fort of Zanzibar, also known as the Arab Fort, is a massive stone fortress built by the Omani Arabs in the late 17th century after they expelled the Portuguese. Located adjacent to the House of Wonders, it now serves as a vibrant cultural center. Inside, visitors can explore the fort's ramparts and courtyards, browse shops selling local crafts, and relax at the open-air amphitheater, which hosts music and dance performances, especially during the Zanzibar International Film Festival. The fort also houses a small museum detailing its history. It's a popular spot for both tourists and locals to gather in the evenings.

Don't miss

  • Walk the ramparts for views of Stone Town and the harbor.
  • Browse the craft shops inside the fort for local souvenirs.
