Christ Church Cathedral, commonly known as Christ Church, is an Anglican cathedral in Stone Town constructed between 1873 and 1879 on the grounds of Zanzibar's largest slave market. The cathedral's altar stands on the exact spot where the whipping post once stood, and a memorial in the courtyard honors the slaves who suffered there. Visitors can see the stark slave chambers beneath the church and the poignant Slave Memorial outside. The cathedral's unique blend of Gothic and Islamic architecture reflects Zanzibar's diverse cultural heritage, making it a powerful symbol of both tragedy and reconciliation.
