The Norias of Hama are colossal wooden water wheels, some dating back to the Mamluk period, that once irrigated the city's gardens. Visitors can walk along the riverbank, watching the creaking wheels dip into the water and hearing their rhythmic splash. The largest, al-Muhammadiyya, spans 21 meters in diameter. At sunset, the wheels are beautifully lit, creating a romantic atmosphere. They remain a symbol of Hama's ingenuity and resilience.

Don't miss

  • Watch the al-Muhammadiyya noria, the largest wheel, in action
  • Stroll the Orontes River promenade at sunset for illuminated wheels
  • Visit the small museum near the norias explaining their history and mechanics
