The Great Mosque of Hama stands on the site of a former Roman temple to Jupiter, later converted to a Byzantine church, and finally into a mosque in the 7th century. Its most distinctive feature is the 11th-century square minaret, one of the oldest in Syria, decorated with Kufic inscriptions. Inside, the prayer hall features reused Roman columns and capitals. The large courtyard contains a fountain for ablutions and ancient stonework. It remains an active place of worship.

Don't miss

  • Climb the ancient square minaret for views over the old city (if open)
  • Examine the Roman columns and Byzantine mosaics incorporated into the walls
  • Observe the peaceful courtyard with its central ablution fountain
