Le Catogne is a striking 2,598-meter mountain located near the village of Orsières, in the Valais region of Switzerland. It is a favorite among hikers and mountaineers for its dramatic pyramidal shape and the challenging but rewarding climb to its summit. The standard route starts from the village of Champex-Lac, following a well-marked trail through forests and alpine meadows before ascending a rocky ridge. The summit offers a stunning panorama of the Mont Blanc massif, the Grand Combin, and the Valais Alps. What makes Le Catogne distinctive is its relative solitude compared to more popular peaks like Mont Fort, and the sense of accomplishment from a proper alpine ascent. You'll see wildflowers in summer, crystalline lakes, and possibly ibex on the slopes. The descent passes by the beautiful Lac de Champex, a perfect spot for a refreshing swim.
