The Kapellbrücke, or Chapel Bridge, is a must-see in Lucerne. This covered wooden bridge, built in the 14th century, is the oldest of its kind in Europe. It spans the Reuss River diagonally, connecting the old town to the newer part of the city. As you walk across, you'll see a series of triangular 17th-century paintings depicting scenes from Swiss history and the city's past. The bridge also features a water tower that once served as a prison, torture chamber, and archive. The experience is like stepping back in time, with the wooden structure creaking underfoot and the river flowing below. The surrounding views of the medieval old town and the Alps in the distance make it a photographer's dream. It's a living piece of history, not just a museum piece, as locals and tourists alike use it daily.

  • Walk the entire length of the bridge to see the 17th-century paintings up close.

  • View the bridge from the riverbanks or the nearby Rathaussteg for a classic photo opportunity.
