Bolle di Magadino is a protected nature reserve located where the Ticino River flows into Lake Maggiore, near Locarno. This area of wetlands, reed beds, and small lakes is one of Switzerland's most important bird sanctuaries, hosting over 200 species of resident and migratory birds. Visitors can explore a network of wooden boardwalks and observation hides that wind through the reeds, offering close-up views of herons, egrets, kingfishers, and grebes. The reserve is also home to amphibians, dragonflies, and rare plants adapted to the marshy environment. The landscape is flat and open, with the backdrop of the Alps and the lake creating a serene setting. A visitor center provides exhibits on the local ecology and history of the delta. The best times to visit are spring and autumn during migration, when the reserve teems with avian activity. Unlike manicured parks, Bolle di Magadino feels wild and untouched, a true escape into nature just minutes from Locarno's city center.
