The Eiger (3,967 m) is perhaps the most famous mountain in the Alps, thanks to its imposing 1,800-meter north face, a sheer wall of rock and ice that has claimed many lives. The face is visible from the Jungfrau Railway, which passes through a tunnel inside the mountain, with windows at the Eigerwand station offering a dizzying view. For non-climbers, the Eiger Trail at the base provides a safe perspective of the face's scale. The mountain's name is thought to derive from the Latin 'acer' (sharp), fitting its jagged profile. The Eiger is part of a trio with the Mönch and Jungfrau, forming a dramatic alpine skyline.
