Barberêche Castle is a charming Renaissance manor located on a peninsula jutting into Lake Schiffenen, about 10 kilometers northwest of Fribourg. Built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier medieval fortress, the castle features elegant facades, a grand staircase, and period-furnished rooms. The surrounding English-style park, with its ancient trees and lakeside paths, invites leisurely strolls. Guided tours (available in French and German) take visitors through the main salons, the library, and the chapel, revealing the history of the de Boccard family who still own the property. The castle's setting is idyllic, with views over the lake and the distant Alps. A highlight is the 'Salle des Chevaliers' (Knights' Hall) with its ornate fireplace. The park is open to the public year-round, while the castle interior can only be visited on a tour.
