The Fribourg funicular, officially known as the Funiculaire de Fribourg, is a beloved city landmark that has been ferrying passengers between the lower district (Basse-Ville) and the upper city (Haute-Ville) for over a century. The line covers a steep 120-meter incline in just over two minutes, offering panoramic views of the Sarine River valley and the medieval rooftops of the old town. The two cars, painted in the city's colors of red and white, pass each other at the midpoint. The funicular is not just a tourist attraction but a vital piece of public transport, used daily by locals to avoid the steep climb. The ride is smooth and quiet, with large windows providing excellent photo opportunities. At the top station, you emerge near the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, while the bottom station is close to the picturesque Planche district with its riverside restaurants.

Don't miss

  • The two-minute ride with stunning views of the Sarine River and the old town
  • The historic wooden cabins, restored to their original 1899 design
  • The top station exit directly opposite the Cathedral of St. Nicholas
  • The bottom station in the lively Planche district, perfect for a riverside stroll
  • The funicular's water-powered history, explained on informational panels at both stations
