Berggasthaus Äscher is one of Switzerland's most photographed restaurants, perched precariously on a rock face of the Ebenalp. Built in 1840 as a farmhouse, it was later converted into an inn and has since become a beloved destination for hikers and travelers. The restaurant serves hearty Appenzell specialties like cheese fondue, rösti, and Älplermagronen (alpine macaroni), all enjoyed on a terrace that seems to float above the valley. The interior is cozy and rustic, with wooden beams and a fireplace that adds warmth on cool days. Reaching the restaurant requires a 10-minute walk from the Ebenalp cable car station along a cliffside path, which offers breathtaking views. The experience of dining while surrounded by sheer rock faces and alpine scenery is unforgettable. Due to its popularity, reservations are highly recommended, especially for lunch during peak season.
