Appenzell village is the picturesque capital of the Appenzell Innerrhoden canton, known for its well-preserved old town with brightly painted facades, ornate signs, and cobblestone streets. The village center revolves around the Landsgemeindeplatz, a large square where the annual open-air assembly (Landsgemeinde) has been held since the 16th century. Surrounding the square are traditional inns, shops selling Appenzeller cheese and embroidery, and the parish church of St. Mauritius. Wandering the narrow lanes, you'll see intricate woodcarvings, colorful shutters, and flower-bedecked balconies. The village is also a hub for hiking and cultural events. What makes Appenzell distinctive is its living tradition: locals still wear traditional costumes on Sundays, and the village maintains a strong sense of identity. You'll experience Swiss rural life at its most authentic, with the backdrop of the Alpstein mountains.
