Appenzell (village)

Appenzell village is the picturesque capital of the Appenzell Innerrhoden canton, known for its well-preserved old town with brightly painted facades, ornate signs, and cobblestone streets. The village center revolves around the Landsgemeindeplatz, a large square where the annual open-air assembly (Landsgemeinde) has been held since the 16th century. Surrounding the square are traditional inns, shops selling Appenzeller cheese and embroidery, and the parish church of St. Mauritius.
