Weligama, meaning 'sandy village' in Sinhalese, is a laid-back coastal town just east of Mirissa. Its wide, crescent-shaped bay is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for beginner surfers, with gentle waves and several surf schools. The town is also famous for its stilt fishermen, who perch on wooden poles driven into the seabed and cast their lines, a traditional fishing method that has become a cultural symbol. Visitors can watch them at work, especially in the late afternoon, and explore the local markets and seafood restaurants along the beach.
