The Polonnaruwa Vatadage is a circular relic house located within the sacred quadrangle of the ancient city. It features four entrances facing the cardinal directions, each flanked by elaborate stone carvings of guard stones and moonstones. The structure once housed a stupa and is surrounded by concentric rows of pillars that supported a wooden roof. Visitors can admire the finely carved lotus motifs and the precision of the stonework, which reflects the architectural sophistication of the Polonnaruwa kingdom.
Don't miss
- Intricately carved moonstone at the northern entrance, considered one of the finest in Sri Lanka
- Four Buddha statues seated in niches around the central stupa
- Ornate guard stones depicting mythical figures like the Naga king
