Kuttam Pokuna, meaning 'Twin Ponds,' are a pair of ancient bathing pools built during the Anuradhapura period, likely for the use of monks from the nearby monasteries. The ponds are fed by an underground water system and connected by a narrow channel. The larger pond features a flight of steps and a beautifully carved 'makara' (mythical beast) spout. Visitors are struck by the symmetry and precision of the stonework, which includes filter chambers to keep the water clean. The site is a testament to the advanced engineering and aesthetic sensibilities of ancient Sri Lankan civilization.

Don't miss

  • Admire the symmetrical design of the two ponds, with the larger one measuring about 40 meters long.
  • Look for the makara spout, a stone carving of a mythical creature that once channeled water into the pond.
  • Observe the intricate stone steps and the remains of a filter system that purified the water.
