Anuradhapura Maha Viharaya is the historic first major Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka, established in the 3rd century BCE by King Devanampiya Tissa after the introduction of Buddhism. It once housed thousands of monks and was a center of Buddhist learning. Today, visitors can explore extensive ruins including monastic buildings, stupas, and the sacred Bodhi tree sapling. The site exudes a serene, spiritual atmosphere, with ancient stone carvings and the remains of meditation halls. It remains an active pilgrimage site, offering a glimpse into early Buddhist monastic life.
